Regent Adelaide L. Sanford | Founder - Fredrica Bey

"Hate cannot drive away hate; only love can, and darkness cannot drive away darkness; only light can."

Afrocentric educator Dr. Adelaide L. Sanford has impacted the lives of students at every level of New York City's school system through her work in shaping educational policy. Born in Brooklyn on November 27, 1925, Dr. Sanford began her career teaching primary grades in New York before rising to the position of vice chancellor of the State University of New York's Board of Regents. Vice Chancellor Sanford has emerged as a leading national advocate for the education of under-served populations. She developed the Concept of a Board for the Education of People of African Ancestry and was instrumental in its development and growth. The programs emanating from this entity have received nation-wide recognition.

Dr. Regent Adelaide L. Sanford is on the Board of of Regents which is the body which determines qualifications for teachers in the State of New York. They are responsible for the sound basic education of the children of New York. She believes that in spite of the efforts of the Board of Regents, there have been bureaucratic stallings and blockages in the attempt to raise the self-esteem of Black children and their parents. We have lost generations. The Adelaide L. Sanford Charter School is now a new hope, a chance to raise the horizons of children.

Dr. Adelaide L. Sanford of New York and Dr. Asa Hilliard of Atlanta, Georgia, are two of our outstanding educators who have counseled many public and private school systems in the various states of the U.S., including New Jersey. They are constant sources of inspiration in countries beyond America. Both are connected to the Adelaide L. Sanford Charter School in Newark, and under the collaboration of Executive Director, Frederica Bey and Project director Linda Muchell.
